Tianjin Forum on “Innovation and Cooperation: Under Development and Regional Governance in Globalization”

Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies and Nankai University jointly hosted the 2nd Tianjin forum on July 7 to 8 at Crowne Plaza Tianjin Mei Jiang Nan under the theme of “Innovation and Cooperation: Under Development and Regional Governance in Globalization.” Approximately 200 scholars and experts in various fields from diverse countries and regions including China, South Korea, the United States, Singapore and Europe attended the 2nd Tianjin Forum.

The opening ceremony was hosted by President GONG ke of Nankai University on July 7th in the morning. Opening speeches were delivered by Chairman CHEY Tae-won of SK Group, Former Italian prime minister Romano PRODI and Governor WON Hee-ryong of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province in South Korea. Chairman CHEY Tae-won talked about Chinese middle-class reform movement and pointed out that qualitative urban development is much more important than quantitative urban development. Other than that, he stressed that we need to readjust a variety of fields for urban development. Romano PRODI, former prime minister of Italy claimed that urban residents and rural residents should be given the same benefits. Not only that, he put emphasis on ‘governance’ where urban population rapidly increases like China. Governor WON Hee-ryong mentioned about an amicable relationship between China and Jeju special self-governing province and further expressed hope to establish a new cooperation between Tianjin and Jeju province.

The opening ceremony was followed by opening keynote speeches. LIN Yifu, former senior vice president of World Bank, delivered the first opening keynote speech. While talking about a pilot project of Free Port District implemented in Shanghai, he emphasized that China is able to build infrastructure in developing countries through ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative. President CHO Dong-sung of Incheon National University delivered important messages in his keynote speech as well. He asserted the future growth model of ‘Smartization’. Based on this model, he claimed that South Korea and China should take human-centered approach for economic growth. Director ZHENG Yongnian of East Asia Institute of National University of Singapore talked about several current problems which China is facing such as capital outflow, urban centralization and lack of concern about refugee problem. As solutions, he suggested improvement of city hierarchy, balance between state enterprise and private enterprise and boost of intercity connection. Finally, David GOSSET, visiting professor of Nankai University, suggested the smart and sustainable city by improving sustainability through ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative.

Sub-forum was held on July 7 to 8. A number of scholars and experts participated in the sub-forum and made intensive presentations and discussion. Sub-forum was about urban development policies, the 4th industrial revolution, urban governance, regional security and economic cooperation. There were 3 panel sessions in each sub-forum. Many scholars and experts from all walks of life actively took part in the sessions and exchanged important values and opinions.

The closing ceremony was held on July 8 in the morning and it started with the closing keynote speech of Vincente GUALLAR, pre-chief architect of the city of Barcelona. As talking about the role of the city in light of deriving innovation, he emphasized that urban development can be accomplished through the cooperation with other countries or other cities. In the next closing keynote speech, Professor CHEN Zongsheng of Nankai Univeristy clearly explained about the income distribution in China. He argued that China needs a far-reaching reform and it should promote economic growth by enhancing the middle-class income in order to get out of the middle-income trap.

After the keynote speech, President PARK In-kook and ZHU Guanglei delivered congratulatory address. President PARK In-kook of Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies stated about the possibility of sustainable urban development through the 4th industrial revolution in his congratulatory address. Vice president ZHU Guanglei of Nankai University said the forum was successful in that young scholars and experts had animated discussion and practical problems about urban development in China were discussed a lot.
