Shanghai Forum 2018: “Asia’s Responsibilities in a World of Change”

The 13th Shanghai Forum was held on May 26th to 28th under the overall theme of “Asia’s Responsibilities in a World of Change” at the Shanghai International Convention Center and Fudan University.  The Shanghai Forum is an international academic conference that has been cohosted by Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies and Fudan University since 2005.




The opening ceremony in the morning of May 26th was moderated by Chancellor JIAO Yang of Fudan University.  Speeches were delivered by President XU Ningsheng of Fudan University, Chairman CHEY Tae-won of SK Group, and Director XU Tao of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges from the Ministry of Education.  During the keynote session that followed, speeches were given by five distinguished speakers: Professor Graham T. ALLISON of Harvard University, Under-Secretary-General Shamshad AKHTAR of the United Nations, Chairman Takeo KAWAMURA of the Committee on Budget from Japan, Former Minister Luiz Carlos BRESSER-PEREIRA of the Brazilian Ministry of Finance, and Director-General WANG Xinkui of the Shanghai WTO Affairs Consultation Center. Five hundred eighty-four delegates from 62 countries and regions participated in the three-day conference including the former World Bank Vice President LIN Yifu, President YEOM Jae-Ho of Korea University, and President KIM Yong Hak of Yonsei University.



In the afternoon of the 26th, roundtable sessions addressing a wide array of critical issues took place at the Shanghai International Convention Center.  Parallel sessions under five panels were held on the 27th at Guanghua Building of Fudan University.  On the last day, a special session entitled “High-Level Conversation: Understanding Neuroscience, Brain-Inspired Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence” was followed by a wrap-up session and closing ceremony.  Topics discussed during the three days included: Trump and Asia, finance and economy, emerging economies, aging challenges, China-Africa cooperation, multilateral development banks, Asia and Europe, scientific and technological innovations, global governance, social entrepreneurship, and environment. 


SK Research Institute for SUPEX Management and Fudan University co-organized a special all-day roundtable on “Social Enterprises and Sustainable Development in New Economy Era – Governance and Social Responsibilities”.  The roundtable was composed of four sessions addressing the role of businesses in society, social issues in China, case studies, and social enterprises in Korea, China, and Japan.
