Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS) is a non-profit organization established in 1974 by the late Chairman CHEY Jong-hyon of SK Group in order to promote national growth through academic development via cultivating world-class scholars.

After establishment, KFAS initiated its Doctoral Study Abroad Scholarship Program to select the brightest students in the country, prepare to send them to top institutions of higher education overseas, and provide full funding including tuition and living expenses. Other scholarship programs were later added to support students in social sciences, natural sciences, East Asian studies, and information technology. So far, a total of 660 individuals have been successfully awarded doctoral degrees while 180 students are currently working on their PhDs. KFAS also offers Undergraduate Student Program and Classical Chinese Studies Program. The former allows undergraduate students to better focus on their studies while the latter teaches Classical Chinese texts to those majoring in humanities and social sciences.

With the inauguration of the current Chairman CHEY Tae-won of SK Group in 2000 as the new head of the KFAS board of trustees, international programs to support other parts of Asia were launched. The International Scholar Exchange Fellowship was set up to invite promising young scholars to Korea for research collaboration with domestic counterparts; Asia Research Centers established at major universities provide financial support for local research and academic activities; and International Forums offer opportunities for scientific exchange and networking among scholars. All of these international programs aim to increase mutual understanding and academic development in the region.

KFAS endeavors to contribute to global academic development and prosperity of human society. Through scholarship and international programs, our organization will continue to give creative individuals a chance to fully realize their potential and establish various platforms for scientific exchange for valuable sharing of knowledge.
